Each spring, the waters around Sitka begin to teem with forage fish like pacific herring which attracts and keeps humpback, gray, and orca whales around until early fall. In addition to our whales, we regularly see bald eagles, harbor seals, stellar sealions, sea otters, and a variety of seabirds including horned and tufted puffins feeding on these same forage fish.
St. Lazaria Island
On our longer trips and weather permitting, we love to take guest out to the rugged island of St. Lazaria which is a part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. This breathtaking island is comprised of towering columns of basalt formed by volcanic/tectonic activity and is home to tens of thousands of nesting seabirds including tufted puffins, pigeon guillemots, and common murres to name a few.
On land we occasionally see coastal brown bears and Sitka black-tailed deer cruising the beaches in search of food. We will be cruising on the largest and most luxurious charter boat in Sitka. Our 45-foot ¾ walkaround Northriver boat is the ultimate platform with ample space to view wildlife and a luxurious wheelhouse that has a stand-up head, heat, a full kitchen, seating for 8, and state of the art electronics.
