Sitka Fishing Charters Crew, Boats and Gear

Sitka fishing chartersCaptain Jon Martin
Captain Jon was raised in Sitka, Alaska where he spent his childhood camping, fishing and hunting with his family. After high school, Jon served in the US Army followed by attending college where he earned a bachelors and a master degree in biology. When Jon is not taking folks on Sitka fishing charters during the summer months, he works as a hunting guide in Alaska and is a professor of biology at the University of Alaska. If you ask Jon which job he enjoys the most, you will most likely get a chuckle followed by him letting you know “none of them feel like work.” With a lifetime of experience on the ocean and in the woods in Alaska, Jon has the knowledge and passion that results in providing guests with a first-class experience. Jon continues to live in Sitka year-round with his wife Amanda, their two daughters Hannah and Brianna, and Chesapeake Bay Retriever Buck.

Our Boat and Gear

The F/V Pole Position is a 32-foot walkaround Almar Sounder with plenty of room to spread out for our favorite technique of mooching for salmon, but also an ample aft for trolling or soaking bait on anchor. Our guests appreciate the heated, enclosed cabin and head plus plenty of room to fish. The vessel is powered by twin Yamaha 300-hp four strokes and is fully equipped with state-of-the-art electronics and safety gear. North Pacific Saltwater fishing will always maintain the highest standards for success on the water. This includes outfitting the boat with quality gear that is technique specific for the fishery.

Mooching is our favorite method to fish salmon in the saltwater on these Sitka fishing charters. We use G•Loomis 1084C Salmon/Steelhead Mooching rods with Shimano Tekotas for that setup. For halibut we have custom rods paired with Accurate Reels plus a couple of electric Tanacom 1000’s by Daiwa for assistance on those big flatfish.
